Invisible Accessibility
Facilities for people with mobility challenges are often quite clinically built, with functionality at the forefront of the design.
When we have traveled and asked to see disabled units in hotels, a common comment from the owner or manager is that most able-bodied people choose not to stay in them because of how they look. So, the question that needs to be asked is, “why would someone in a wheelchair want to stay there”? Our vision is to develop a venue and accommodation that is “invisibly accessible”, built in a way that accessibility is inherent in its design and suitable whether you are walking or wheeling; for the design to be inclusive rather than having designated ‘disabled’ spaces. We believe that accessibility does not inherently mean the design has to be bare, unwelcoming, and purely functional. There are still challenges to be met as we continue to develop our vision.
